Why should businesses enter awards and what are the benefits?

There are lots of benefits to entering awards - particularly if you get shortlisted, and especially if you win! Below are 11 reasons why you should consider entering awards.

  • Celebrate your hard work, achievements and successes
  • Boost staff morale and employee motivation
  • Good excuse for a glam night out at the award ceremony and a treat for your team, suppliers, clients or partners who accompany you
  • Great networking opportunity - with guests, sponsors, judges and other shortlisted  businesses
  • Generate PR and news as a result of being shortlisted and/or winning
  • Often get write ups, photos and even videos on the event organiser's website, as well as any media partners' websites - great for PR and SEO
  • Can attract new clients and customers who see you've won awards
  • Can also appeal to potential employees, partners or investors
  • Position your business with other industry leaders
  • Writing entries gives you the chance to reflect on what went well on projects and what can be improved for next time
  • Boosts credibility and can set you apart from your competitors

What do I need to consider when entering awards?

There are a number of key things you need to consider before entering awards.

  • Budget: Awards usually have some associated costs and you need to include these in your PR and marketing budgets. Check the fee for entering (some are free, others charge), as well as the cost of attending the award ceremony if you get shortlisted. Remember any associated costs like travel, accommodation and refreshments.
  • Credibility: Not all award schemes are credible. You need to do your research and carry out due diligence to make sure you're spending time and money on entering reputable awards.
  • Time: It can take time to gather all the relevant information and write an effective award entry that will catch the judges' attention and put you in a good position to get shortlisted and win.
  • Criteria: You need to make sure you meet all the criteria when compiling your entry, while also telling a compelling story and backing up your claims with evidence.
  • Maximise: It's great to get shortlisted and win awards, but you need to know how to maximise the PR and marketing opportunities, as well as how you can use it to help build and establish new relationships and partnerships.
